marbleLIVE TAPS INTO THE CREATIVE MINDS OF OCAD UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN NEW COLLABORATION

(Toronto—June 24, 2015) - OCAD University’s Digital Media, Research + Innovation Institute (DMRII) and marbleLIVE, the company behind the Greater Toronto Area’s next-generation amazement park, are hosting their first collaborative Game Jam on Thursday, June 25, 2015. 

This game jam is an intensive creative exercise hosted by OCAD University’s game:play Lab and open to graduate and undergraduate students across all OCAD U disciplines. Student teams will be asked to design, develop and prototype innovative game concepts that could be featured in marbleLIVE’s state-of-the-art indoor-outdoor water theme park in development for the GTA. Participants will incorporate technologies such as smart wearables, player tracking, responsive screens and other emerging devices to create a wraparound play experience.

Teams will present their work to a panel of industry experts who will choose a first-place winner at the end of the game jam. This panel will include Johnny Kalangis, Vice-President, Creative (Digital), marblemedia and Nancy Patterson, Director, Business Development & Design at OpenAire, a company which designs and manufactures unique custom retractable roof structures around the world.  

“This collaboration with OCAD University offers students an array of opportunities to diversify their skillset through mentorship with the marbleLIVE team and its partners, as well as events that will exercise their expertise, knowledge and limitless imagination,” said marbleLIVE’s Partner/Digital Lead, Mark Bishop. “marbleLIVE is excited to be working with OCAD University, whose faculty and students are leaders in the area of the arts and design. They are not afraid to break traditional conventions and disrupt the industry with their thinking and vision, much like marbleLIVE.”

“This is an exciting opportunity for our students, offering a real-world context in which to try out their game design skills and collaborate with colleagues with diverse creative approaches,” said Dr. Emma Westecott, Director, game:play Lab, OCAD U. “This partnership with marbleLIVE gives participants a chance to design a unique and live play experience.”

As part of this venture, marbleLIVE will work with OCAD University's faculty to provide experiential learning opportunities that invite students to explore current industry challenges; understand business practices and decision-making; learn project management skills; and identify which skills are necessary for success after graduation. OCAD U puts resources behind such collaborations in order to invest in the future success of its students.

Slated to start construction in 2016, marbleLIVE will span 100,000 square feet and be a water-themed indoor–outdoor facility with a retractable roof offering 365 days of summer to GTA residents and visitors. With an emphasis on digital technology, the attraction will invite guests to customize their time at the park, allowing them to experience something new with every visit.

NEXT GENERATION WATER PARK AND EVENT COMPLEX PLANNED FOR GREATER TORONTO AREA

First-of-its-kind, all-ages attraction, will have a retractable roof and operate year-round

Toronto, ON (March 18, 2014) – A massive indoor/outdoor water park and event complex is being planned for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The $60 million dollar facility is scheduled to begin construction in the spring of 2015 and be fully operational by the fall of 2016. The 100,000 square-foot attraction will feature a retractable roof, allowing it to operate 365 days a year. The development group behind the project, marbleLIVE, is led by Toronto entrepreneur John Barrack and marblemedia, one of Canada’s leading multiplatform content creators. The water park and event complex will fill a significant void in the GTA’s tourism market - a market that before the opening of the Ripley’s Aquarium last fall, had not seen a new attraction established in over 25 years.

“People in the GTA are hungry for new entertainment experiences,” said John Barrack, Managing Partner, marbleLIVE. “We’re going to give them a dynamic year-round attraction that’s part-water-park, part-theme-park and all fun, all the time.”

Mark Bishop, Co-CEO marblemedia said, “This attraction will be far from your typical waterpark. We are going to bring our company’s expertise in digital media and storytelling to create a purpose built digital media experience that will be the first attraction of its kind.”

Barrack and Bishop are in discussion with city officials in Mississauga and Toronto about potential sites. They have also been briefing Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport about the boost the attraction will have on the tourism industry in the GTA.

Barrack said, “We now have a short-list of three locations. Our final decision will be based on our intricate design and operational needs, as well as visitor accessibility.”

The all-season, indoor/outdoor water park will bring significant employment opportunities to the GTA during the development stages of its creation. Once fully operational, the attraction will employ 230 full-time personnel and expects to attract over half a million visitors within its first year of operation.

In addition to Barrack and Bishop, the development group includes New Jersey-based Jerry Merola of Amusement Entertainment LLC and EFA Partners of New York. marblemedia’s multiplatform content is seen in over 120 countries, with leading broadcast partners worldwide including Disney XD, Nickelodeon, YTV and BBC.
